Clubs, as a form of Rods has a
masculine connotation,
perhaps contrasted with
Hearts/ Cups.

The implication of
a bludgeoning
weapon, combined
with the dual meaning
of a "social club"
implicates that
clubs has much to
do with society
and perhaps
"beating the competition"
or "keeping up with the
Joneses".

The strength of the rod may
symbolize strength, and especially
strength of numbers. For example,
a one of rods is something that is
strong by itself--akin to a Tower,
Champion, or Wall-- while a Ten of
Rods is symbolic of a mob of one
kind or another.
